FOOD & FUN FAIR

Food and Fun Fair took place on the 28th of  March. A week before that was a week of transformation and decoration of the school. Staff members, decorators and operators were setting the necessary equipment for the event to be held. Food and Fun Fair is a charity event which is held at Overseas School of Colombo annually. It implies that children, parents, their friends and people who are not related to school come, have a good time and donate, buying the tickets necessary to do something there. Basically, the whole football field was turned into the entertaining park, cushion fights, water slide, face prints, Deaf Hearing service games and many other activities. Besides the active part of the event, people could also chill in the shadows of the tents and listen to the live concert done by students and teachers from OSC. The other important part was, of course, food. Canteen and the rest of the field were filled with numerous quantity of different dishes from around the world, sushi, waffles, kebabs and kotthu. This is where the OSC motto 'Unity in Diversity' could be brought in.
What was I doing there? As I have mentioned before, the concert was organized. It was accompanying the whole event. I was a participant of this, performing as a singer with the girls' voice group and my band The Sweet Chains. I was supposed to perform three songs with the girls' vocal group and one song with the band. However, suddenly the thunder showed up and we were running out of time. Thus, we could perform only 2 out of 3 songs with voice group, and the band performance...luckily we managed to do it. Our band performance was actually quite impressing and astonishing. We were performing the  I love Rock'n'Roll by Joan Jett with the striking sound of thunder. I felt like a prophet propagating my rock religion to the people when the world was at its edge...We performed that song one time already on the Gecko Factor and I would say that the second time our performance was even better. I am happy to see our progress; we feel each other much better now, we know each others' weaknesses and we know how to deal with them. This is undoubtedly great!
However, I cannot say the same about our voice group performance. We did not have a lot of time to practice even though our tutor did her best in organizing extra rehearsals. We did not know our parts well enough and the music equipment was not regulated properly. Anyway it was a very useful experience for all of us as we learned how not to be distracted by wrong microphones' regulation and to stick to each others pitch. That was challenging but we did what we could.
Overall, I liked being a participant of this charity event. I also contributed to the collected donation by buying some food. The most impressive and memorable for me was when Jazlin McGinley, our OSC student, shaved off her hair to contribute to the donation for cancer diseased children. I respect her a lot for this.
