MUSIC MAKERS: Welcome to the Wonderland of talents On 29th of April in the auditorium of Overseas School of Colombo the second largest event after the Gala Concert was held. The name of the event, Music Makers, makes it clear that the event was about the music. Many musically gifted students, teachers and guest performers were involved in this fabulous concert. The concert was organized and led by Head of the Arts department of OSC Mrs. Duncan. She was really passionate about it and literally charged all the participators including me with her drive. Likewise my previous performances I performed with the Girl's Voice group and my rock band The Sweet Chains. This time our band performance was in the very beginning of the concert because of what I was very nervous. We usually performed in the second half of the concert after I've sung couple of songs with the Voice and have been sort of warmed up. However, during the Music Makers I had to warm up with my solo. Nevertheles...

WELCOME TO SOS VILLAGE On the 9th of April before going on the vacations our service group visited SOS Village, the home of children with whom we work. Even though some of the students were there before it was my first time. I wondered and simultaneously was happy to see the level and the conditions which were provided there. I expected something like that but it surprised me anyway. Probably because all the orphanages I saw before SOS Village were absolutely different and I became biased to some extent. The buildings at SOS were of a beautiful design and tidy. The thing that I remembered well was that there were a lot of trees and other vegetation. Unfortunately, I did not see the whole construction as I decided to stay and play with the children. When we arrived children were on the field. We divided into two teams, adults versus children, to play cricket. That was absolutely new for me and it was great! I have never played cricket before. Even though I could...

FOOTBALL 2015 For ASA Block 3 I chose football U-19 as my major extracurricular activity. I intended to make the team and go on SAISA Girls' Soccer Championship in Dhaka. We had trainings 4 times a week including Wednesday morning fitness sessions. Overall I would say it was a challenging experience for me as I had never actually played football before and, moreover, I had never been coached. All my background in football was the random games with guys in the schoolyard back in my home country. Therefore, during the first trainings I was sort of lost and did not play well. However, after a month of constant trainings I noticed how much I have improved. I learned different techniques and strategies such as offensive and defensive positions on the field, jockey, spreading out and many other specific things. I never knew that much about football. In addition, football had a huge influence on the fitness of my body. I did a lot of running during these 2.5 months of soccer an...

FOOD & FUN FAIR Food and Fun Fair took place on the 28th of March. A week before that was a week of transformation and decoration of the school. Staff members, decorators and operators were setting the necessary equipment for the event to be held. Food and Fun Fair is a charity event which is held at Overseas School of Colombo annually. It implies that children, parents, their friends and people who are not related to school come, have a good time and donate, buying the tickets necessary to do something there. Basically, the whole football field was turned into the entertaining park, cushion fights, water slide, face prints, Deaf Hearing service games and many other activities. Besides the active part of the event, people could also chill in the shadows of the tents and listen to the live concert done by students and teachers from OSC. The other important part was, of course, food. Canteen and the rest of the field were filled with numerous quantity of different dishes f...

Little Red Riding Hood "Once she gave her a little riding hood of red velvet, which suited her so well that she would never wear anything else; so she was always called 'Little Red Riding Hood." Elizabeth and Tulika are acting out the scene of the Red Cap talking to a fake Grandmother. Photo Credit: Elizabeth Schwabe On the 19th of March, our service session was special. Before going to the swimming pool and computer lab as we, our service team and children from SOS Village, usually do, we had watched the performance done by other service group 'Random Acts of Kindness'. That time we became an object of kindness. The participants of that service, Tulika, Elizabeth, Joaquin and Greta, prepared a modernized drama sketch of a famous fairytale Little Red Ridding Hood (aka Red Cap ) by Brothers Grimm. The sketch was funny. However, not all the children understood the happenings as they ...

Gecko Factor: Back to stage On the 14th of February, SGA organized an annual music competition for junior and student talents called Gecko Factor resembling the well-known X-Factor show. I was performing as a soloist with my band The Sweet Chains. We were performing a song I love Rock'n'Roll by Joan Jett. Fortunately, this performance did not bring us any surprise as the previous one did during the Gala concert. An interesting fact was that we did not actually have time to practice much before this event. Therefore, this performance was quite risky. However, even though, I think, we could do even better, we did not have any obvious mistakes, which is a unquestionable progress! We filled up our 'piggy-bank' of our experience. We did not win this contest but I was not even upset as I do love singing and especially rock songs. We had fun, enjoyed performing together, had an opportunity to show how we can do it and this is the best award. Hopefully, audience liked...
